Welcome to the final step in the BrainTrack App Activity – Complete to earn 1 hour of CPD in the Reviewing Performance (RP) category
Activity Summary
Dementia is one of the most significant public health issues facing Australia today. There are approximately 411,000 people living with dementia in Australia, and this number is set to double by 2058 given our ageing population. Dementia is now Australia’s second leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability for people over the age of 65.
Many GPs lack the knowledge, skills and confidence to make a diagnosis of dementia, and struggle to access clear post diagnostic care pathways. A timely diagnosis allows people living with dementia, their families and carers the opportunity to be informed about the condition, the prognosis, and to access treatments that may potentially slow down the trajectory of the disease and improve their quality of life. There is no curative treatment for dementia, however we now know that there are at least 12 modifiable risk factors for dementia that could prevent 40% of dementia cases globally.
Utilising a tool like the BrainTrack app in primary care has the potential to engage people with education around brain health and dementia risk reduction, while at the same time providing a vehicle to start the often difficult conversation about dementia.
Learning Objectives
- Review Dementia Australia’s BrainTrack app
- Evaluate how the BrainTrack app would be useful in practice
- Implement the BrainTrack app to educate patients about brain health, dementia risk reduction and potentially facilitate a more timely diagnosis of dementia
